Material coverage:
3/8”, ½”, and 1” rock
120 square feet per ton at 2 inches deep
1-4” rock
80 square feet per ton
4-8” rock
40 square feet per ton
Filldirt and topsoil
120 square feet per ton at 2 inches deep
Planters mix
160 square feet per ton at 2 inches deep
How Do I Figure Out How Many Tons I Need?
First you need to figure out your square footage by multiplying your length times your width. Length x width = square footage.
Then depending on what material you are figuring for, you will want to divide the square footage according to the material coverage listed above.
For example:
- Someone has an area that is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide and they want to cover it in a ½” rock at 2 inches deep.
- Figure out the square footage: 20 x 15 = 300 square feet
- Now a ½” rock covers about 120 square feet at 2 inches deep so divide the square footage accordingly: 300 divided by 120 = 2.5 tons
- So this person would need 2.5 tons of ½” rock to cover their area.
